The invention relates to designs for absorbing elements in a control and protection system for a tank-type water-cooled nuclear reactor. The absorbing element comprises a casing, within which a neutron absorber is arranged, a first end cap, which is arranged above a first part of the neutron absorber and consists of a tail part and a weighting part, which parts are rigidly connected to one another, and a second end cap, which is arranged below a second part of the neutron absorber, which first and second end caps are connected to the casing by resistance butt welding. Furthermore, the ratio of the length of the casing l to the length of the absorbing element L is from 0.7 to 0.9, and the ratio of the total mass of the neutron absorbers m to the total mass of the metal structures of the absorbing element M is from 0.2 to 0.64.
