The present invention relates to a road and path lighting system (1) having a lighting apparatus (2, 2') comprising a projection unit (3) for projecting signals (40, 50) onto a projection area (4, 5), and a communications module (6, 6') which is designed so as to control the projection unit (3) on the basis of incoming input signals. As an alternative or in addition, the invention relates to a road and path lighting system (1) having a lighting apparatus (2, 2') comprising a light source (21, 30), a transmission unit (10, 11, 12, 8) having a transmitter, wherein the transmission unit (10, 11, 12, 8) is at a distance from the light source (21, 30), a communications module (6, 6') for actuating the light source (21, 30) on the basis of data which is transmitted by means of the transmission unit (10, 11, 12, 8), and a wireless data communications unit (9) by means of which the transmission unit (10, 11, 12, 8) is connected only wirelessly to a receiver of the communications module (6, 6'), and wherein the transmission unit (10, 11, 12, 8) preferably has an independent energy source. The transmission unit can also be designed as a sensor unit (8) having a sensor, said sensor unit preferably being provided on the lighting apparatus (2, 2'), in particular on the outside thereof.
