Provided are an optical device and detection apparatus by which an organic molecule film can be formed on a dielectric between metal nanostructures and shaped so as to facilitate entry of target molecules while still narrowing the gap between the metal nanostructures, thus improving sensitivity. This optical device (10) includes: a substrate (12) having a dielectric (16) on the surface; a metal microstructure (20) composed of a plurality of metal nanostructures (18) formed on the dielectric; and an organic molecule film (30) that is formed on the dielectric between the plurality of metal nanostructures, and captures target molecules. The diameter of the plurality of metal nanostructures is 1 to 500 nm as seen in plan view, and the gap between neighboring metal nanostructures is 0.1 to less than 10 nm. In the plurality of metal nanostructures, a gap (W2) between neighboring metal nanostructures at a second height position (H2) from the surface of the dielectric is wider than a first gap (W1) between neighboring metal nanostructures at a first height position (H1) (H2>H1) from the surface of the dielectric. |
