PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance in high speed milling cutting and high speed intermittent cutting of alloy steel or the like.SOLUTION: A surface-coated cutting tool is obtained by coating a surface of a base which comprises a WC-based cemented carbide, TiCN-based cermet and a cBN-based superhigh-pressure sintered compact with a (TiAl)(CN) layer having a cubic structure (wherein X and Y are each an atomic ratio and satisfy 0.55≤X≤0.95 and 0.0005≤Y≤0.005, respectively), the layer being formed by a chemical vapor deposition method using Al(CH)as a reactive gas component. The surface-coated cutting tool has such a composition gradient structure that the amount Xof the Al on the inside L of the hard coating layer at the depth of 0.5 μm from the surface of the base satisfies 0.55≤X≤0.70 and the amount Xof the Al on the inside H of the hard coating layer at the depth of 0.5 μm from the surface layer of the hard coating layer satisfies 0.80≤X≤0.95. In the inside L, an average aspect ratio Ais 1-2 and in the inside H, an average aspect ratio Ais 3-10. |
