摘要 608,936. Machines for making boxes. STOKES & SMITH CO. July 6, 1944, No. 12924. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1941. [Class 18] In making wrapped stayed boxes, adhesively coated wrappers W are fed on a belt 6 to an assembly station O, box blanks BB are delivered in succession to a position near the station O so that they may be registered manually with the wrapper, and the assembled blanks and wrappers are delivered to the wrapping mechanism 7, and control means are provided at the assembly station so that an operative can interrupt delivery of wrappers to the conveyer during continuing operation of the conveyer, or control the operation of the conveyer independently of delivery of wrappers, or control the delivery of blanks independently of the conveyer and of delivery of wrappers to the conveyer. A second operative may be stationed at a position to transfer manually the assembled blanks and wrappers to the wrapping mechanism M. The wrappers are lifted successively from a stack S by suction means 1 and are fed to an adhesive applying roll and thence to the intermittently operated belt 6. Tabs t cut from rolls R may be applied to the wrappers. Prescored blanks BB are fed from a stack BS into the path of a plunger 9 which carries the blanks downwardly between sets of bending tools which bend the sides and ends of the blanks along the scoring lines; upon release of the blanks, they fall upon a conveyer 10 and are fed to a stop immediately in front of the operative at station O. After manual assembly of the blanks and wrappers, they are advanced by the conveyer 6 to the wrapping mechanism M, which may as described in Specification 513,345. A lever 8 permits the operative to actuate a valve 9A to prevent the device 1 from lifting a wrapper from the stack S, and where tabs t are used, to prevent supply of a tab to the conveyer 6. A control pedal 35 actuates a clutch member 25 to permit the conveyer 6 to be actuated independently of the blank supplying and wrapping mechanisms so that the first wrapper can be brought to the assembly position O. A control knob 76 is provided to permit independent actuation of the blank supplying and bending mechanism B. When the first wrapper and blank are assembled, a pedal 102 is depressed to bring into operation the wrapping mechanism. Cams 38, 77 rotated by the wrapping mechanism ensure that so long as the pedal 102 is depressed, the conveyer 6 and the mechanism B are automatically operated. By actuation of the handle 8, supply of blanks to the conveyer can be interrupted, and after the last blank and wrapper are assembled, the motor 64 of the blank supplying and bending mechanism can be stopped by operating a switch 64S, the conveyer 6 continuing to deliver the assembled blanks and wrappers to the wrapping mechanism. The blank supplying and bending mechanism B may be of known form or may comprise a slide for ejecting the top blank from a stack BS on to guide plates 130 disposed below the plunger 9. A bar or roll 129, which bears upon the top blank, and a bar 130A are so spaced that one blank only can be ejected from the stack. Stops 135 and sides of the plates 130 register the blank with its scoring lines beneath the plunger. The bending of the blank is performed by reciprocating tools comprising lower members 154 and upper members 155 having edge-receiving slots between them. The side and end walls are partly erected by guide plates 172 positioned above the bending tools. When a second operative is positioned at the wrapping position, the manual and pedal controls may be duplicated so that the various mechanisms can be independently controlled by each operative. A separate conveyer 16 may be provided, as in Fig. 2, for feeding the assembled blanks and wrappers past the wrapping mechanism and discharging the finished boxes, or a single conveyer may be provided, the wrapping mechanism being so disposed that an operative at that station can position the assembled blank and wrapper on the forming block 12 of the wrapping mechanism. To accommodate large as well as small wrappers, a narrow conveyer belt may be arranged at either side of the conveyer 6. Various arrangements of the wrapper and blank supplying and wrapping mechanism, and of the conveyers are described.
