Regeneration of a diesel particle filter (DPF) of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle is controlled according to a vehicle operating condition, and soot mass loading of the DPF. Regeneration modes include active regeneration and forced passive regeneration, and operating conditions may include highway, town and off-road driving, towing, wading and transmission range selection. One strategy determines initiation of regeneration in either active regeneration or forced passive regeneration mode, another determines cessation of regeneration and another determines whether to continue with regeneration. The range may have a lower value greater than 20% of the maximum soot mass loading. A single range may be used for each operating condition of the vehicle. Forced passive regeneration may be used below a predetermined vehicle speed, coolant temperature, exhaust temperature, engine load or wading depth. Regeneration may be inhibited upon engine start until reaching a predetermined minimum engine or exhaust temperature, or continuous running of the engine has reached a predetermined time.
|
