Manual park release method for a vehicle having an automatic transmission

A method of manually releasing a vehicle park mode comprises manually rotating via a selector lever or handle 120 a power actuated a spring biased selector shaft 122 from a park mode position P1 to a park release mode position P2 and then locking the lever 120. The lever 120 is locked by an operative who pushes a service pin 130 through a hole (225, fig 2) or holes 125 in the lever 120 and then into a pin receiving aperture 115 in a transmission housing 110H. The pin 130 may have a T-shaped free end which is rotated in the aperture 115 to prevent withdrawal. The lever 120 may be rotated by the operative pulling a ring pull (454) coupled to the lever 120 by a Bowden cable (440) and locked by a service pin (430) inserted in a stem (454S) of a barrel member (452). The lever 120 may be bi-stable and bent so that a hook tip (320T) engages with a recess (315) or the lever may have a hook member (560) which is hooked around a pin (530).
