PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can form a specifically shaped rugged pattern exactly by a simple means on a predetermined position of the surface of a coating film without using any filler and without contaminating the surface with foreign matter or stain. SOLUTION: The method for producing a patterned coating film comprises a forming step of a specifically shaped rugged pattern on the surface of a coating film by applying a coating fluid containing a liquid medium to a substrate to form a wet coating film thereon, placing a cooling plate provided with the specifically shaped rugged pattern substantially in parallel with the surface of the coating film at a predetermined distance from the surface of the wet film in a manner in which the rugged pattern is opposite to the coating film surface, and evaporating the liquid medium from the coating film.
