Assigning player positions in an online table game

A computer-implemented method of and system for operating instances of a game having a plurality of game positions that can be occupied by players, such as table positions in an internet poker-type game. The method comprises associating with a player a plurality of weights relating to respective game positions, where each weight is indicative of a respective bias towards placement of the player at the respective game position. In response to participation of a player in a first game instance at a given game position, each of the plurality of weights is updated to indicate an altered bias towards placement at each respective position. The player is then assigned to a second game instance based on one or more of the updated weights. The time that a player has been waiting or idling may also be used as a factor to assign a player a game position. A player may be assigned to a second game instance when their participation in a first game instance ends by additionally connecting the players client to a second game instance. The invention seeks to avoid unfair advantages or disadvantages in games where player position is important, such as Texas Hold Em poker.
