A gearbox test rig, for testing first and/or second gearboxes 20, 22, comprises a first coupler 2 which couples low-speed shafts 30, 32 of the first and second gearboxes 20, 22. A second coupler 4 has a hydraulic rotary actuator 46 and couples high-speed shafts 32, 36 of the first and second gearboxes 20, 22 so that the second coupler 4 regulates torque applied to the high-speed shafts 32, 36. The second coupler 4 comprises first and second drive belts 40, 42 which are coupled to opposite ends of a synchronising shaft 44 and to the high-speed shafts 32, 36. A drive motor 24 drives the low-speed shafts 30, 34. A controller controls the actuator 46 to vary a torque, e.g. a transient torque, applied to the high-speed shafts 32, 36. The applied torque is sensed by torque sensors. The first coupler 2 may be mechanical or hydraulic. The gearbox test rig is for testing heavy duty wind turbine gearboxes.
