The aim of the invention is to provide a solution for how the functionality or area of application of a driver assistance system having a camera can be expanded in comparison to the prior art. The invention relates to a method for operating a driver assistance system in a motor vehicle, in which an image (10) of an adjacent vehicle (11) is captured by a camera of the driver assistance system. A processor processes the image (10) and identifies at least one object (1, 12, 13) on the adjacent vehicle (11) in the image (10). The processor determines an orientation of the adjacent vehicle (11) relative to the motor vehicle on the basis of a copy of the identified object (1, 12, 13). The invention also relates to a driver assistance system for carrying out such a method, and to a motor vehicle comprising a driver assistance system.
