The machine has a table for supporting the sheet material (8) on surface (3) of a table (2), and a lowerable press beam that is arranged above the table surface. An elastic plate-shaped portion covers the press beam on the table surface, and the press beam clamps the material between an elastic element (21) and the table. A blade (4) is provided above the table surface and adjacent to the press beam, for cutting the material in cutting plane. A feed unit for to-be-cut material is provided perpendicular to the cutting plane. The elastic element consists of rubber.
