497,575. Friction clutches; variablespeed gearing. BRAMBLE, W. H., and RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. April 15, 1937, No. 10702. [Class 80 (ii)] In a hydraulically-operated double cone clutch for use in constant-mesh variable-speed gearing, a block 21 secured to a driven (or driving) shaft 13 is formed with oppositelydirected longitudinal cylinders 22 and 23 housing pistons 24 abutting against the webs of the inner cone members 17 and 18 which rotate with the shaft 13, but are slidable relative thereto, and which co-operate with outer driving (or driven) cones 15 and 16 loose on the shaft. As shown, the members 17 and 18 are secured together by bolts passing through the block 21, but they may be unconnected, in which case they are held against their respective pistons by springs. Oil or other liquid under pressure is supplied alternatively to the cylinders 22 and 23 through passages in the shaft 13 and block 21 under the control of a valve, which latter may be such as to give a neutral position in which both clutches are disengaged. The gear shown includes two such double clutches. Specification 497,578 is referred to. |
