PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition and a method for forming a multilayer coating film, for forming a multilayer coating film excellent in smoothness, image clarity, flip-flop property, adhesiveness and water resistance.SOLUTION: A water-based coating composition comprises acrylic resin particles (A), a hydroxyl group-containing resin (B), a crosslinking agent (C), a viscosity controlling agent (D) and a pigment (E). The acrylic resin particles (A) have a core-shell structure, in which a core part is crosslinked; and the acrylic resin particles include 3 to 70 pts.mass of a polymerizable unsaturated monomer (a1) having a hydrocarbon group with 4 or more carbon atoms. The viscosity controlling agent (D) comprises 5 to 50 pts.mass of a polymerizable unsaturated monomer (d1) having a weight average molecular weight of 100,000 or more and a polyoxyalkylene chain, 5 to 90 pts.mass of a hydrophilic functional group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer (d2), and 5 to 90 pts.mass of other polymerizable unsaturated monomers (d3). A method for forming a multilayer coating film is also disclosed. |
