PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a branched carbon fiber.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing a branched carbon fiber. The method comprises: a dispersion liquid producing step of producing a dispersion liquid containing resin and pitch; a nonwoven fabric producing step of producing a nonwoven fabric made of a carbon fiber precursor from the dispersion liquid; a pressurizing step of applying a pressure of 1 KPa or more to the nonwoven fabric; and a modifying step of modifying the carbon fiber precursor of the nonwoven fabric after the pressurizing step, into the carbon fiber.
