PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a liquid seal between an expansion valve and a liquid-side shut-off valve in an air conditioner, performing a cooling operation in which a refrigerant is circulated in the order of a compressor, an outdoor heat exchanger, the expansion valve, the liquid-side shut-off valve, and an indoor heat exchanger, even when a totally-closed type expansion valve is used as the expansion valve.SOLUTION: In an air conditioner, a totally-closed type expansion valve 24 is provided to a refrigerant circuit in an arrangement state such that a refrigerant flows in laterally and flows out downward in a cooling operation. The expansion valve 24 includes a spring 62 which energizes a needle 61 downward in a totally-closed state. Energizing force of the spring 62 in the totally-closed state is set so that the total of maximum saturation pressure of the refrigerant corresponding to a maximum value of an ambient temperature in an installation place of the expansion valve 24 and a back pressure valve opening pressure difference generating force for pushing up upward the needle 61 is equal to or less than a minimum value of withstanding pressure of components constituting the part from the expansion valve 24 to a liquid-side shut-off valve in the refrigerant circuit. |
