PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the degree of safety in a secondary battery and a battery system including a secondary battery.SOLUTION: A secondary batty comprises: an electrode group including a positive electrode and a negative electrode; a battery case for accommodating the battery group; a reference electrode installed in the batty case; a voltage sensor; and an external transmission device. The voltage sensor senses the potential difference &Dgr;VP between the positive electrode and the reference electrode and the potential difference &Dgr;VN between the negative electrode and the reference electrode, and the potential difference &Dgr;VP and the potential difference &Dgr;VN sensed by the voltage sensor are wirelessly transmitted to the exterior of the battery case via the external transmission device.
