The system (1) has a first estimation unit (17) for estimating a differential rate of sulfur oxides (deltaQsox, est) across a nitrogen oxide trap (2), and a second estimation unit for estimating the concentration of nitrogen oxides (Cnox, out, est) at an outlet of the trap. A third estimation unit (19) estimates sulfur oxide mass (Msox) stored in the trap from a sum of differential flow of particles of sulfur oxides and a calculated deviation between the estimated value and a measured value of the concentration of nitrogen oxides (Cnox, out, mes) at the outlet of the trap. An independent claim is also included for a method for estimating sulfur oxide mass stored in a nitrogen oxide trap mounted in an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine of a car.
