The wound closure devices can achieve wound closure in lieu of compression and can be configured to be quickly deployable by an introducer or from outside the body. The tissue closure device (70) has a distal flexible cap (670) and a stem (672). The cap includes a plurality of protrusions disposed on a distal surface (680) which provide flexibility in a first direction while resisting deflection in a second direction opposite the first direction. The stem has one end contacting a proximal surface of the distal flexible cap, wherein the distal flexible cap is formable toward an axis when deflected in the first direction. The stem further comprises a proximally positioned aperture. The distal cap and the stem are formed from a single integral piece of a bio-absorbable material.
