The method involves determining parameters of material removal device (17) to prepare engraving (10). The regions (2,3) with different material or structural properties in non-homogeneous decorative material (1) are detected by acquisition unit (15), and the position of engraving relative to regions is defined. The material-removal processing of decorative material is performed by material removal device, while adjusting processing parameters as function of regions, so that different material and/or structural properties are compensated during preparation of engraving extending partially. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) plant suitable for performing engraving process of inhomogeneous decorative material.
