The method involves causing a consumer electronics (CE) apparatus (12) to retrieve an apparatus-specific code i.e. aileron code, from a server (24) through a social network that is designed as an Internet (14), where the service is associated with a social network. The retrieved code is displayed on a display (16) of the CE apparatus. The displayed code is detected by a detector i.e. camera, of a mobile device (18) through another server (26) through the social network. A data connection is established between the CE apparatus and the mobile device based on the detected code. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling a programmable CE apparatus connected to a mobile device through a social network.
