[Problem] A retarder equipped within an induction motor, wherein a motor speed sensor for detecting the speed of the induction motor is rendered unnecessary. [Solution] A retarder (10) equipped with an induction motor (11) that is connected to the output shaft (43) of a transmission (42), and a control unit (12) for controlling this induction motor (11), wherein the control unit (12) receives information detected from a vehicle speed sensor equipped to a vehicle (1) transmitted from from the vehicle (1) side (external to the retarder (10)), and controls the induction motor (11) on the basis of this information.
