The internal combustion engine has multiple cylinders (1 to 4), where one of the cylinders has an additional valve (24 to 27) in addition to an inlet valve (6 to 13) and an outlet valve (15 to 22). A camshaft (29) is provided, which is coupled with a crankshaft (5) and through which the additional valve is operated. Multiple cam profiles are assigned to the additional valve. The rotational movement of the cam shaft is implemented by cam profiles during opening and closing of the additional valve, where the opening and closing of the additional valve correspond to a hub profile.
