A device for monitoring an eccentricity or a smallest air gap (25) of a rotating electric machine during operation thereof, the rotating electric machine having a rotor (21) and a stator (22), and the device comprises a plurality of sensing coils (1-8) wound around the core of the stator (22) at different circumferential locations and arranged to sense induced voltages caused by interaction of magnetic fluxes in the core of the stator (22) of the rotating electric machine; and a control device (23) operatively connected to the plurality of sensing coils (1-8) and arranged to receive the sensed induced voltages and to calculate an eccentricity or a smallest air gap (25) of the rotating electric machine based on the sensed induced voltages.
