PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus adjustment device, in which when focus adjustment is performed by a phase difference system, control between a fixed exposure value and a variable one is performed appropriately in accordance with situations.SOLUTION: A focus adjustment device comprises: an image pickup element including a plurality of unit cells having a first pixel and a second pixel corresponding to the same microlens; detection means for detecting a phase difference between an image signal in a first pixel group and an image signal in a second pixel group corresponding to a focus detection area; focus control means for executing focus control on the basis of a detection result of the detection means; and exposure control means for controlling an exposure value on the basis of an output from the image pickup element; wherein the detection means detects the phase difference between image signals obtained by sequentially changing over the plurality of focus detection areas; and the exposure control means performs such control that the exposure value is kept fixed until detection of a phase difference performed by the exposure means at a plurality of focus detection areas is completed.
