The device (12) has a light source (17) e.g. LED and laser, for illuminating a detection area (20), where the device is arranged in a recess (13) formed in a metal sheet holder (5) or a die of a deep-drawing tool. A semiconductor optical sensor (18) detects position changes in the detection area. The optical sensor is arranged such that the optical sensor receives light in a direction vertical to a direction of position changes in the detection area. A condenser lens (19) is arranged between the detection area and the optical sensor. The semiconductor optical sensor is designed as a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor or charge coupled device (CCD) sensor.
