One embodiment of the present invention pertains to an organic EL device provided with: an anode and a cathode which are disposed so as to face each other with a space therebetween; a functional layer which contains an organic material and which is interposed between the anode and the cathode; and a hole injection layer which has a function for injecting holes to the functional layer and which is interposed between the anode and the functional layer. The hole injection layer is a mixed layer comprising a first oxide and a second oxide. The first oxide is a p-type metal oxide, while the second oxide is an oxide which is thermally stable both in a first state wherein an element constituting the composition of the oxide takes the maximum valence and in a second state wherein the element takes a valence smaller than the maximum valence, with the second state being more thermally stable than the first state. The second oxide incorporated in the hole injection layer contains the element in the first state.
