The device (1) has a current determining device (12) for determination of output current (Io) of the device. A control unit (10) controls a switch unit (8) i.e. electronic switch, such that the switch unit is opened, if a potential short circuit at an output terminal (5) is determined based on the output current. The switch unit is again closed, if difference between an output voltage measured after opening the switch unit, and an output voltage measured before opening of the switch unit, exceeds a voltage threshold value. An independent claim is also included for an electronic safety method.
