This invention relates to a communication system wherein a master station apparatus (10) is connected to a plurality of slave station apparatuses (20) via an optical transmission path (30) and wherein a plurality of wavelengths are used to perform at least one of the downstream communication and the upstream communication. The master station apparatus (10) comprises: a control unit (11) that allocates, to the slave station apparatuses (20), wavelengths to be used in communications and that generates control signals for notifying the slave station apparatuses (20) of the allocated wavelengths; and optical transmitters (14) that transmit, to the slave station apparatuses (20), the control signals generated by the control unit (11). The slave station apparatuses (20) each comprise an optical receiver (23) and an optical transmitter (24) that use wavelengths, which are based on the control signal received from the master station apparatus (10), to perform the communications with the master station apparatus (10).
