An apparatus 1 is described for cleaning a plurality of cylindrical workpieces 2 such as the barrels of pneumatic or hydraulic rams having an open first end and a second end opposite to the first end. The second end is closed by an end-cap 3. The apparatus comprises a receiver 56 for receiving a plurality of the cylindrical workpieces 2. The receiver 56 is movable from a loading orientation in which the cylindrical workpieces 2 are substantially horizontal to a cleaning orientation in which the cylindrical workpieces 2 are located in a cleaning chamber 61 in a substantially vertical orientation such that cleaning is achieved by a cascading action around the surfaces of the cylindrical workpieces 2. Cleaning fluid is pumped at high volume into, and around, all surfaces of the cylinders 2. The cleaning liquid is delivered through nozzles 59 in high volume and with considerable force upwards through the open cylinders 2 and crashed against the closed end caps 3. The released liquid cascades down around all surfaces, inside and outside as well as through the pipes 5 and cavities of the cylinders 2, and returns to the holding reservoir 50 underneath where it is filtered before being re-pumped upwards again. <Figure 6>
