A hinge having a damped self closing arrangement comprising a housing 1 having a spindle 9 with a first cam surfaces 24 engaged by a pusher head 22 of a spring biased closing piston 17 and a second cam surface (49) engaged by a pusher head 27 of a spring biased damping piston 38 arrangement within a cylinder; the pistons extend perpendicular of the spindle axis. The damping piston head includes a one way valve 34 with a first chamber 37 formed by the interior surface of the piston head and the cylinder and at least a portion of a second chamber 38 formed by the exterior of the piston head and the spindle 9 a fluid path may include two adjustable threaded needle valves 36 (51). The damping cam (49) has a variable radius to the spindle axis and the cam may be triangular formed by two tapered planar surfaces (fig.21), heart shaped (fig.23), or convex with an apex (fig.17). The spindle may include stop surfaces holding a door open. The spindle 9 may be coaxial with the hinge axis or offset coupled to the hinge by a gear train (fig.2) or crank lever (fig.12). |
