Vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber is reclaimed by heating it in the presence of an organic disulphide which is a hydrocarbon except for the sulphur contained therein. The disulphides may be aromatic or aliphatic, the preferred compounds having 8-32 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon portion of the molecule. Specified substances are butyl, tertiary butyl, amyl, isoamyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, diphenyl, and benzyl disulphides, and solutions of disulphides in crude cresylic acid or heavy kerosenes. Heating may be effected directly, by treatment on hot rolls, by infra-red radiatons, high frequency alternating voltage, milling, masticating or convection. The synthetic rubbers may be polymers of butadiene, and copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile. These disulphides may be used also in the devulcanizing process of Specification 610,812. The disulphide is preferably dissolved in a solvent such as xylol and pinetar, coal-tar, rosin, rosin oil and fatty acids may be added. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 572,268.
|
