A method for obtaining coefficients for a non-adaptive controller for use in an active noise control system comprises: capturing experimental data from a target system to characterise the plant 809 of the target system; and implementing an adaptive algorithm 811 to compute the coefficients in dependence on the experimental data, for example by adjusting coefficients to minimise an error signal. Preferably, the controller runs a pre-programmed non-adaptive algorithm. The ANC controller may be used in a feedforward, feedback or hybrid system such as an audio headset. The adaptive algorithm may be implemented in sub-bands (707) and obtains the coefficients automatically and independently of the system to be controlled. Once the coefficients have been determined, the values may be programmed onto a multitude of DSP chips, allowing for a simple method of mass producing digital ANC controllers. Claims to a method of configuring an audio device and to an ANC integrated circuit are also disclosed.
