<p>A pericardial blood suction apparatus for use in cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is disclosed. The apparatus comprises means for withdrawing blood from a subjects chest cavity and/or heart chamber 30, and a reservoir 24 in which withdrawn blood is de-aired. Preferably the apparatus is a low pressure suction and/or vent system, capable of conserving blood. Preferably the apparatus automatically de-airs the blood in the reservoir and returns the de-aired blood either manually or automatically to the CPB apparatus or a parallel reservoir. Optionally, the reservoir 24 comprises an internal chamber 46 which contains the withdrawn blood for a sufficient time to allow de-airing to occur. Preferably the means for withdrawing blood comprises a source of negative pressure such as suction or a vacuum source 30. Optionally the reservoir comprises a blood sensor 32 which monitors the volume of blood in the reservoir 24 and controls blood feeding means depending on the blood volume.</p> |
