[Class 108 (i)] Fastening means for detachably securing a hood to a motor vehicle comprise a flanged member or members, at least one of which is pivoted to the top of a window of the vehicle, and adapted to grip the edges of the hood or a depending flap. The pivoted member or members may be disengaged from the hood on loweririg the window or opening the door. In-the forms shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 a C-shaped member 8 pivoted at 7 to the upper end of a window frame 4 is normally urged upwardly by springs 9 to engage either the edge 10 of a hood 11 or an enlarged bead or flange 12 on a depending flap 13. A cord 15 is kept in tension when the hood is extended, being anchored at its front end, for example, to a windscreen pillar, and at its opposite end to a spring. 16, Fig. 1- The cord may be elastic and the spring dispensed with. At the rear part of the window frame 6, fixed flanges are provided between which, when the hood is erected, the bead 12 may be slid or pressed. Mechanism is shown in Fig. 1 whereby the door 1 may be opened or the window 3 lowered with the hood erected. On moving the door handle (not shown) the bolt 25 is retracted out of engagement with the striking plate 39, and causes the push rod 24 to move against the lever 26 which rocks about its pin 27 and pulls the cable 19 which in turn serves to draw the flanged member 8 downwardly and release the hood. The pin 38 on the lower end of the lever 26 engages in a slot 37 in the limb 36A of the T-shaped lever 34 and is retained therein under the action of the spring 36 so that the member 8 is retained in its lowered position until the door is closed. On closing the door the latch 30 come against a cam face (not shown) on the striking plate 39 which moves the rod 31 to the right and causes one end of the bell-crank lever 33 to press downwardly the T-shaped lever 34 and disengage the pin 38 from the slot 37. The spindle of the window winder is provided with a cam 40 adapted to move a lever 41 and rod 43 connected to the lever 26 to free the hood when the window is lowered. -A jockey pulley 29 controlled by a spring 46 keeps the cable 19 taut. In a modification the member 8 is controlled by cables passing up inside the window frame 4. In a further modification the flanged members 7 and 8 are provided at the top of a removable side screen, actuation of the pivoted member when the door is opened being by means of a rod engaging an inclined surface on the bottom door frame. The actuating rod is jointed so that the top half may be removed with the side screen. Hydraulic means may also be used for lowering the pivoted flange member when the door is opened or the window lowered.</p> |
