<p>An emergency lifting apparatus 14 to be used with a first lifting apparatus 18, such as a subsea winch, supporting a payload (10, Fig 1) to raise the payload in response to an emergency signal, for example in response to winch failure. The apparatus may be used on a ship or on an offshore rig. In one embodiment, the apparatus 14 comprises a frame 23 attached near the top of a tower 12, on which is mounted fixed pulleys 24, 28 and a ram 32 connected to a pulley 26. Wire 16 connects the payload to the first lifting apparatus 18. The apparatus is configured so that the wire 16 normally does not contact pulleys 24, 26, 28, but on activation ram 32 moves pulley 26 into contact with wire 16. This lifts the payload a short, predetermined distance to clear adjacent structures.</p> |
