PURPOSE: A memory device including a flash memory and a preliminary block management method thereof are provided to secure data integrity and to extend a life span of the memory device by performing garbage collection and trimming processing. CONSTITUTION: A flash memory (240) includes two or more preliminary block areas. If one of the preliminary block areas is changed to a bad block area, a Flash Translation Layer (FTL) unit (255) allocates a new preliminary block area by using free blocks included in a data area of the flash memory. If the free blocks is not sufficient in the data area, the FTL unit performs garbage collection and trimming processing for securing free blocks.
