A display device and a driving method thereof are provided to enhance a dynamic contrast by actively changing a gamma source according to image information. A timing controller(240) sets a reference value of digital image data from the outside, extracts a frame histogram distribution value of the digital image data, and compares the reference value with the extracted distribution value. The timing controller stretches the digital image data signal according to a compared result. A programmable gamma buffer(250) adjusts a gamma voltage curve, so that a brightness of the gamma voltage corresponding to the stretched digital image data signal is matched with the brightness of the gamma voltage corresponding to the non-stretched digital image data signal. A scan driver(220) supplies a scan signal to a display panel(210). A data driver(230) supplies the stretched digital image data from the timing controller and the gamma voltage from the programmable gamma buffer to the display panel. |
