A digital broadcast receiver includes a demultiplexer for demultiplexing a digital television stream into a video stream and a supplementary stream, the supplementary stream including an Event information table (EIT) describing an event having one or more closed captioning services. A controller decodes a caption service descriptor providing closed captioning information in the EIT. The descriptor includes information indicating a number of closed caption services present in an associated EIT event, information defining a language associated with each closed caption service, information indicating whether a digital television closed caption service or a line 21 closed caption service is present in the video stream, and information identifying a caption service number for each closed caption service. A video decoder decodes video data in the video stream and a caption decoder decodes caption data in the video stream. |
