PURPOSE: An image recording device of a vehicle and an operating method thereof are provided to obtain accurate images in a dark place by generating light and recording the images when a surrounding environment is below a predetermined level of illumination. CONSTITUTION: An image recording device of a vehicle comprises an illumination sensor unit (111), a light generation unit (112), a camera unit (113), a memory unit (114), an event detection unit (115), and a control unit (116). The illumination sensor unit senses the illumination of the outside. The light generation unit generates light according to a light generation controlling command signal. The camera unit films a subject through a camera. The memory unit sets a standard illumination value for generating the light in advance and stores the same. The event detection unit detects the occurrence of an event through a sensor. The control unit transmits a light generation controlling command to the light generation unit by comparing the illumination information sensed by the illumination sensor unit and the standard illumination value set in the memory unit. The control unit confirms the event occurrence information detected by the event detection unit. The control unit processed image data filmed in the camera unit and records the same in the memory unit.
