A method and an apparatus for motion estimation, and a method and an apparatus for image encoding by using the same are provided to shorten a motion detection time for the same size of image data by detecting a macro block with motion by comparing a current frame with a previous frame, estimating and compensating motion in only a macro block with the motion, thereby shortening an image encoding time. A method for motion estimation comprises the following steps of: selecting a macro block within the current frame of an image(S300); selecting a pixel's position to determine whether there is the motion(S310); comparing the pixel value of the current frame of the image with the pixel value of a previous frame for the selected pixel's position and detecting the motion(S320); and estimating and compensating the motion of only a macro block of which the motion is detected(S360,S370). |
