PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reinforcing agent capable of improving characteristics of a rubber composition or a plastic composition, and a method of producing the reinforcing agent.SOLUTION: A reinforcing agent for rubber or plastic is produced by: fixing a silicon compound having an alkoxysilyl group and a living radical polymerization initiating group to the surface of a solid material; and performing living radical polymerization of a radically polymerizable monomer using the living radical polymerization initiating group as a polymerization starting point. A compound represented by general formula (1) is used as the silicon compound. (In the formula: A is a group capable of initiating radical polymerization; Zand Zare each independently a bivalent group including at least a carbon atom; Rand Rare each independently a 1-3C alkyl group; and n is an integer of 1 to 3).
