PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling an internal combustion engine which limits emission undesirable compounds of nitrogen and oxygen and increases transient power.SOLUTION: A method for controlling an internal combustion engine operates the engine with a first power output by providing a first fuel-air mixture with a combustion chamber receives a request of an increased power output larger than the first power outputted from the engine, provides the second fuel-air mixture having larger fuel than the first fuel-air mixture with the combustion chamber of the engine, and while a flow of the exhaust gas is treated by non-urea based treatment and the engine is enriched, reduces a level of a contamination substance in exhaust gas, thus increasing an engine output while causing a real-time elimination decrease of the contamination substance and increasing the engine output while causing a real-time elimination decrease of the contamination substance.
