A method for tagging news video subtitles is disclosed. Firstly, capturing a news video; decoding the news video and obtaining a single-frame video image; extracting a candidate subtitles region from the video image and positioning the region of news subtitles; and matching the region of news subtitles with a template image from a news template library; if a match exists, then tagging the region of news subtitles according to the template image tagging format; if no match exists, then tagging the region of news subtitles. The technical solution of the present invention improves the accuracy rate of the subtitles tagging in the video, reducing the time of manual proofreading, and enhancing the effect of the news video retrieval.
