The present invention provides a filtering medium for water filters, which has high collection efficiency and a long filter life, and a water filtering apparatus provided with the filtering medium. This filtering medium for water filters is constituted by a sheet in which are layered: a nanofiber layer in which the average fiber diameter of a single fiber is in the range of 10-1000 nm and which satisfies all the conditions listed below; and a base material comprising a woven or non-woven fabric including a hydrophilic fiber in which the average fiber diameter of a single fiber is equal to or greater than 1μm.
