The expansion card (100) has a front port (110) which is coupled to a coupling unit, and a rear port (120) for connecting the card to computer system. An arithmetic processor (130) transmits and processes the signals between front and rear ports. A ROM (140) stores the sets of control data corresponding to a protocol for exchanging data with external device. The processor controls the coupling unit to be coupled to the front port in accordance with protocol based on control data set acquired from the ROM.
