The method involves determining whether a controlling person e.g. driver, is present in a motor car (8) based on a motion sensor for monitoring a passenger compartment of the motor car. A start-stop function of the motor car is performed (10) when the controlling person is determined to be present in the motor car or the start-stop function is performed when a desired utilization of the motor car is detected by a terminal of the motor car, where the start-stop function is provided for a powertrain, an internal combustion engine or an electric motor of the motor car. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for operating a motor car.
