The method involves detecting the pressure in a deformable cavity in the outer area of a vehicle by a pressure sensor. The pressure change that is normalized to the ambient air pressure is evaluated as a pressure signal, and the type or a parameter of a collision is derived from the evaluation result. The pressure signal is integrated or the samples of the pressure signal are summed, and the value is taken into account during the deduction. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a pedestrian protection system with a pedestrian protection device; and (2) an occupant protection system with an occupant protection device.
