The present invention performs generic object recognition on the basis of silhouette information containing multiple objects. The invention implements an image recognition method for performing recognition processing on an object or a shape, said method characterized in comprising: a contour extraction step of extracting a contour of an object or a shape on the basis of object image data as an object of detection; a feature point detection step of detecting a feature point group on the basis of the extracted contour; a partial contour generation step of using the detected feature point information to partition the contours between the feature points into one or more regions in order to generate the partitioned regions as partial contours; and a contour matching step of selecting one or more of the generated partial contours and matching same with contour information.
