Systems and apparatus for triggering of machine to machine (M2M) devices (e.g., smart meters) are provided. In one aspect, a method for machine to machine communication is provided. The method includes receiving a device triggering request message from a server. The device triggering request message includes an identifier. The method further includes identifying a machine to machine service layer protocol based on contents of the device triggering request message and the identifier. The method further includes identifying a sensor based at least in part on the identifier. The method further includes sending a message to the sensor as defined by the identified machine to machine service layer protocol.
